Nutrition Program

Home-Delivered Meals

Healthy, nutritious meals delivered directly to older adults who have difficulty preparing food for themselves.

Who is this for?

The Home-Delivered Meals program is available to adults 60 years of age or older in our service area who:

  • Are unable to prepare their own meals due to disability, illness, or frailty
  • Live alone or are at nutritional risk
  • Have limited or no family support for meal preparation
  • Are unable to safely travel to a senior center for meals

There is no income requirement to receive this service.

What does it cost?

Meals are provided at no cost to participants, though a voluntary contribution is encouraged. We will never turn anyone away due to inability to pay.

About Contributions

We ask participants who are able to make a suggested contribution of $3 per meal. These contributions help us serve more seniors in our community.

Where is it available?

Home-Delivered Meals are available in all eight jurisdictions we serve:

ChesapeakeFranklinNorfolkPortsmouthSuffolkVirginia BeachIsle of WightSouthampton County

How does it work?

  • A trained volunteer or staff driver delivers a hot meal to your door — typically 5 days a week (Monday–Friday).
  • Weekend and holiday meals may be provided as frozen meals, depending on your location.
  • Meals are prepared following USDA guidelines and meet one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for older adults.
  • Special dietary needs (low-sodium, diabetic-friendly, pureed) can often be accommodated. Please ask when you apply.
  • Delivery staff also conduct brief wellness checks — an important safety benefit for homebound older adults.

What do I need to apply?

Applying is simple. You'll need:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Your date of birth
  • Your home address (for delivery)
  • Information about why you need meal assistance

We do not require proof of income, medical records, or insurance information to apply.

How long does it take?

We work as quickly as possible to begin delivery. Typical wait times:

  • Application processing: 3–5 business days
  • First delivery: 1–2 weeks after approval, depending on your location and current capacity
  • If there is a waiting list, we will let you know and keep your application on file

We can often accommodate diabetic-friendly, low-sodium, and other medically necessary diet modifications. Please let us know your needs when you apply and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
Please call our office at least one day in advance if you'll be away or need to pause deliveries. This helps us reduce food waste and ensures your delivery volunteer isn't making an unnecessary trip.
Yes. Living with family does not automatically disqualify you. Eligibility is based on your own ability to prepare meals and your individual nutritional needs, not household composition.
No physician referral is required to apply. You can contact us directly to begin the application process. Healthcare providers and social workers can also refer patients on their behalf.
